Oeschinensee is one of the most beautiful family outings in Switzerland — but also one of the easiest places to underestimate when travelling with babies, toddlers or young children.
The views are spectacular, the lake is unforgettable, and the journey is surprisingly manageable with small kids if you know what to expect before arriving.
If you’re staying at Chalet Dahai, the trip is straightforward and can easily become one of the highlights of your family holiday in Kandersteg.
Getting to Oeschinensee (from Chalet Dahai)
From Chalet Dahai, you can either:
-
Walk to Kandersteg train station (around 7 minutes) and continue towards the cable car area.
-
Drive directly to the Oeschinen cable car valley station.
-
Use the local bus during the main season.
The cable car valley station is located at:
Oeschistrasse 50
3718 Kandersteg
The gondola ride takes you directly into the UNESCO World Heritage area surrounding Oeschinensee.
Book Your Cable Car Tickets Early
Especially during summer weekends and school holidays, booking online is strongly recommended.
The Oeschinensee cable car now operates with reserved ascent time slots, helping reduce queues and overcrowding. Tickets can be rebooked online if plans change and availability allows.
For families with small children, we recommend you to go up early. You will avoid the bigger crowds and allow yourself plenty of time to explore – plus we all know that 5 minutes planned with toddler tend to take 30 🙂

Is Oeschinensee Suitable with Toddlers?
Yes — but expectations matter.
The gondola makes the biggest climb easy, but reaching the lake still requires walking. The route from the mountain station to the lake includes gravel paths and gentle downhill sections. Most families with toddlers manage it comfortably, but lightweight travel strollers often struggle on some sections.
For younger children, a baby carrier is usually the most comfortable option.
Our recommendation:
-
Baby carrier for children under 3
-
Lightweight hiking stroller only if your child still needs frequent breaks
-
Comfortable walking shoes for everyone
What to Do at Oeschinensee with Kids
1. Explore the Lake Shore
The easiest and most rewarding activity is simply walking along the lake and stopping whenever children want to play, throw stones or enjoy a snack.
The scenery is impressive even without completing a longer hike.
2. Rent a Row Boat
One of the most memorable family experiences is renting a rowing boat and heading out onto the turquoise water.
Boat rentals are available directly at the lake during the season.
3. Try the Mountain Coaster
Near the mountain station you’ll find the popular mountain coaster.
Children from age 3 can ride together with an adult, while older children can ride independently under the official rules.
4. Picnic with a View
Many families prefer bringing their own lunch and enjoying a relaxed picnic by the lake instead of trying to fit restaurant schedules around tired children.

Returning to Chalet Dahai
One of the nicest parts of visiting Oeschinensee with young children is returning somewhere comfortable afterwards.
After a full day outdoors, it helps to come back to a place already prepared for family routines: laundry for muddy clothes, space for outdoor gear, practical kitchen equipment for an easy dinner, and family-friendly details that make evenings feel calmer.
