A short cable-car ride from the valley, no timed reservation to worry about, a themed children&#8217;s trail right at the top, and space to walk slowly, stop often and simply look. It&#8217;s one of our favourite easy days out with a toddler.<\/em><\/p>\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2>Why Sunnb\u00fcel is so good with young children<\/h2>\t\t\t\t\n\t\t<p>Most high-mountain trails ask a lot of little legs. Sunnb\u00fcel doesn&#8217;t. From the top station the land opens onto the\u00a0<strong>Spittelmatte<\/strong>, a broad, gently sloping plateau ringed by the Altels and Rinderhorn \u2014 so instead of steep switchbacks, you get wide, open paths and long views. It&#8217;s the kind of place where the walking is easy enough that the\u00a0<em>day<\/em>\u00a0becomes about stopping: to watch, to point, to sit in the grass.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>A few things that make it easier than a lot of alpine outings:<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:list --><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul><!-- wp:list-item --><\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>By bus:<\/strong>\u00a0hop on at the\u00a0<strong>H\u00fcttet\u00fcrli<\/strong>\u00a0stop, a minute from the front door \u2014 the bus runs about\u00a0<strong>once an hour<\/strong>\u00a0to the Sunnb\u00fcel valley station, so check the timetable (the SBB app is easiest) to line up with your morning.<\/li>\n<li><strong>By car:<\/strong> it&#8217;s just a few minutes&#8217; drive south to the valley station, where there&#8217;s parking right by the cable car.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Either way, you reach the foot of the cable car with no long transfer to start or end the day.<\/p>\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2>The children&#8217;s trail right at the top<\/h2>\t\t\t\t\n\t\t<p>Here&#8217;s the happy surprise: step off the cable car and the\u00a0<strong>Godi &amp; Kari children&#8217;s trail<\/strong>\u00a0begins right at the mountain station. The paths here are\u00a0<strong>suitable for toddlers<\/strong>, and in parts even manageable with an\u00a0<strong>all-terrain or sports stroller<\/strong>\u00a0\u2014 though not everywhere, and you&#8217;ll be pushing uphill on some stretches, so go in with realistic expectations rather than relying on the stroller the whole way.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>Our honest recommendation:\u00a0<strong>bring a carrier or a hiking backpack<\/strong>\u00a0for the moment little legs give out. On our visit, our toddler walked, ran and explored happily \u2014 and then slept half the way in the carrier while we kept going. Having it on your back means you never have to cut the day short or carry a grumpy child in your arms.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>And really, the whole appeal of Sunnb\u00fcel is that you\u00a0<em>don&#8217;t<\/em>\u00a0need to rush. It has a sunny terrace with big mountain views, and the menu runs from simple snacks to proper home cooking \u2014 with\u00a0<strong>healthy, wholesome options that suit every age<\/strong>, little ones included. There are children&#8217;s swings and wooden deck chairs nearby too, so grown-ups can sit with a coffee while the children play.
